Workplace Safety — A Brief Guide for New Staff
13 questions · 20 min suggested · Lesson 15 of 31 · 30 XP
The safety of every member of staff is the responsibility of every member of staff. This short guide sets out the most important things you need to know before starting work on site. A full copy of the Safety Handbook is available on the intranet.
**Arrival on site.** You must sign in at the main reception on arrival and sign out again when you leave. A staff identity badge will be issued on your first day and must be worn on a visible lanyard at all times. Visitors to your part of the building must be accompanied by a member of staff and must sign in at reception.
**Fire safety.** The building has two fire drills a year. During a drill, everyone must leave the building by the nearest marked exit and gather at the assembly point in the staff car park. Lifts must not be used. If you discover a fire, raise the alarm using the nearest red call point, then leave the building. You should not attempt to put out the fire unless you have been specifically trained to do so.
**First aid.** A small first-aid kit is kept in every kitchen and in each meeting room larger than ten people. A list of designated first-aiders, with photographs, is displayed in all communal areas. In the event of an injury, call an appropriate first-aider before attempting any treatment yourself. Any incident must be recorded in the online accident book within twenty-four hours.
**Lifting and handling.** Staff are expected to use the mechanical aids (trolleys, lifts, carts) that are provided, rather than carrying heavy items by hand. Anyone needing to lift something heavier than fifteen kilograms should ask a colleague for help and should never lift from the floor with a straight back.
**Reporting concerns.** Any safety concern, however minor, can be reported confidentially to the site safety officer by email. You do not need to go through your line manager.
