The Three Articles

English has three articles: a, an, and the. They do very different jobs.

"An" replaces "a" before a vowel sound (not letter): an hour, a university.

When to Use "The"

Use the when:

  1. The noun has been mentioned before A man entered the room. The man was wearing a suit. 2. The noun is unique in context I'll meet you at the library. (the one we both know) 3. There is only one in the world The sun, the moon, the internet 4. With superlatives and ordinals The best decision, the first time 5. With some geographic features The Amazon, the Pacific, the Sahara, the Alps 6. With countries that are unions or plurals The United States, the Netherlands, the UK

When NOT to Use "The"

Do not use "the" with:

  • Plural nouns in general: Cars produce pollution. (not the cars)
  • Uncountable nouns in general: Water is essential. (not the water)
  • Proper nouns of people: John said... (not the John)
  • Most country names: France, India, China (not the France)
  • Abstract nouns in general: Education matters. (not the education)
  • Meals, languages, sports: for lunch, in English, plays tennis

Common IELTS Mistakes

Mistake 1: Missing "the" with specific reference > โŒ Chart shows population of Tokyo. > โœ… The chart shows the population of Tokyo.

Mistake 2: Extra "the" with general meaning > โŒ The children today spend too much time on the phones. > โœ… Children today spend too much time on phones.

Mistake 3: Wrong article with abstract nouns > โŒ The love is important in society. > โœ… Love is important in society.

Mistake 4: "A" vs "An" with silent letters > โŒ a hour > โœ… an hour (silent H, vowel sound)

Band-7+ Tip

Use "the" before a noun to make an abstract idea specific. Compare:

  • Education is important. (general, band 6)
  • The education we receive shapes our entire working life. (specific, band 7+)

Both are correct; the second lets you develop an argument in Task 2.
